About Oxford

If you’re looking for the peace and comfort of suburban life alongside the convenience of major urban amenities, look no further than Oxford, Michigan. Like its namesake in Great Britain, Oxford is a beautiful community, laden with trees and sporting copious amounts of wildlife.

Oxford was, until relatively recently, a rural community. Located about 50 miles north of Detroit and 33 miles southeast of Flint, the area was once primarily used for hunting, farming, and trapping; in the mid-1800s, the community had grown into a viable commercial center, with businesses making, among other things, carriages and beer. With a rail line running from Detroit through Pontiac and then through Oxford, the village stayed relevant for the rest of the 19th century and into the 20th. With the mass migration to Detroit’s suburbs in the postwar years, Oxford began to grow, and as people look to build their lives with the aid of a major city close by, Oxford continues to grow.

Much like its neighbors, Oxford has a housing stock that includes homes that are over 75 years old, homes that are brand new, and almost everything in between. You can have a 115-year-old 2,500-square-foot home with 4 bedrooms and perfect hardwood floors, or go contemporary with a ranch featuring an open floor plan and the latest in kitchen technology.

As Oxford is primarily residential, with three major swaths of industrial areas, its downtown is a key community hub. The Oxford across the Atlantic is nicknamed “the City of Dreaming Spires,” and in its spirit, the over-100-year-old downtown Oxford features at least one spire within its eclectic mix of restaurants and shops. Downtown events include concerts in nearby Centennial Park every Thursday in summer, and a celebration of fall called the Scarecrow Festival.

There’s more fun nearby, with the Bald Mountain State Recreation Area just down the road. Take advantage of its 4,637 acres of trails and lakes with some cross-country skiing, wildlife watching, swimming, or camping. Back in Oxford proper, take advantage of Oxford’s youth and athletic leagues, four parks with playscapes and ballfields, and a splash pad for kiddos who want to get wet.

While Oxford’s education system would be hard-pressed to claim the prestige of the similarly-named university, it does just fine on its own. The district’s nine schools are Michigan Blue Ribbon Exemplary Schools. Spanish and Chinese classes begin in PreK. For students showing interest and promise in the arts, the Oxford Arts Conservatory caters to them through a wealth of visual, media, and theatre programs. For children showing a love for music, orchestra programs are available as early as kindergarten.

Kids, adults, and everyone in between will find something to love about Oxford. From its serene nature, to its proximity to two large cities, to its variety of housing stock, Oxford is built for you, and welcomes you.
